Antonio Galloni is impressed with the 2014 Lutum wines !

“This is an impressive set of wines from Lutum and Gavin Chanin. As always Lutum sources fruit from a number of properties in Santa Barbara and Sonoma, which gives the range a good bit of breadth. Pinot Noir is the main player in this lineup. Broadly speaking, the Lutum Pinots are made in a bigger, richer style than the wines Chanin makes under his own brand. That is attributable to vinifications with fully destemmed fruit as well as a selection of sites and blocks that tend to naturally produce slightly bigger wines.”

2014 Lutum Gap’s Crown Vineyard Chardonnay – 96 points “Silky, layered and wonderfully nuanced, the Gap’s Crown oozes personality. The 2014 is understand and soft-spoken, but there is no shortage of nuance. This is a stunning Chardonnay from Gavin Chanin.”

2014 Lutum Durell Vineyard Chardonnay- 94 points “ A vertical, intense wine, the Durell is also the most structured and outright powerful Chardonnay Gavin Chanin makes.”

2014 Lutum Durell Pinot Noir – 94 points ” the most intense and powerful of the Lutum Pinot Noirs. Bright red and purplish-hued fruits, smoke, tobacco, licorice, game and spices give the Durell an element of exoticism that is impossible to miss.”

2014 Lutum Bien Nacido Vineyard Pinot Noir – 94 points “Hints of earthiness, crushed leaves, dark wild cherries and licorice gradually flesh out, but only with great reluctance. Readers will have to be patient. This is an especially virile, masculine expression of Bien Nacido.”

2014 Lutum Sanford & Benedict Pinot Noir– 93 Points “bold, rich and juicy. Succulent dark cherry, plum, mocha, leather and dark spice are front and center. The use of fully destemmed fruit and newer vineyards seems to yield a distinctly juicy, fruit-driven style of S&B Pinot ”

2014 Lutum La Rinconada Vineyard Pinot Noir – 93 points “ an exquisite, gracious Pinot endowed with real class. This is an especially understated vintage for the Rinconada, but it all works, and very nicely.”

2014 Lutum Rita’s CrownVineyard Pinot Noir – 92 points “soft, polished and understated. There is good brightness in the fruit, but less complexity and depth than in the best Pinots in the range.  It should drink well with minimal cellaring.

2014 Lutum Gap’s Crown Vineyard Pinot Noir – 91 points “bright, focused and nuanced. There is good energy to match the wine’s distinctly savory profile, but the 2014 remains a bit compact, especially through the middle.”
