2011 La Rinconada Vineyard Pinot Noir- 94 points *Year’s Best Pinot Noir
“While most pinot noirs from the Santa Rita Hills are deeply colored, this one is astonishingly pale, rosy rather than purple. Grown at a block of the Mount Eden selection planted in 1997 on La Rinconada’s shale-laced slope, this wine’s color is the first clue to its captivating delicacy: You get the salty, wild energy of the Santa Rita Hills, but at a lower volume, the wine’s earthiness conveyed on a seamless line, feeling composed and weightless. With air, the aromas continue to deepen, the stem-driven earthiness and cedar scents melding with the wine’s bright fruit tones (think red plum and pink grapefruit). Together, they create something intense and complex. It feels balanced, built to gain detail from some time in the cellar, but it already had Tonya Pitts of SF’s One Market dreaming of salt-crusted sea bream.” —Luke Sykora
